Dr. Grant Stevens, Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon, Inducted into the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Marina Plastic Surgery Associates’ Medical Director is pleased to join this organization whose primary focus is on continuing education for surgeons.

Los Angeles, May 29, 2007 – Dr. Grant Stevens, a Los Angeles plastic surgeon known for surgical innovation, clinical research and a drive to teach young physicians, was welcomed as a member of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) today. He joins only 196 United States members who share knowledge and experience, holding each other to the highest standards of ethics and performance.

The ISAPS was founded in 1970 when formal training programs in plastic surgery were limited. The organization’s principal mission was, and remains: to teach standards of care, to help develop refinements to established techniques and to evaluate and promote emerging trends and technologies. “The ISAPS is the only international group of its kind,” said Dr. Stevens. “It enables surgeons from all over the world to work together. I look forward to meeting and engaging with even more of my contemporaries.”

With his own very strong commitment to sharing knowledge with others, Dr. Stevens promises to be an active new member for the ISAPS. Under his direction, Marina Plastic Surgery Associates, Dr. Stevens’ Los Angeles area plastic surgery practice, produces and presents more peer-reviewed clinical papers than any other practice in the United States. In addition, Dr. Stevens offers one of only 15 offering fellowships accredited by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Many young surgeons have extended their educational process with additional training through Dr. Stevens’ accredited program.

Dr. Stevens has a track record outside the U.S. as well, having served as a visiting professor at the University of Sweden and the University of Denmark during his career. He looks forward to even more opportunities to collaborate across national boundaries. “I have several areas of particularly strong interest I’d like to share and explore further,” remarked Dr. Stevens. “Combination surgical procedures-such as simultaneous abdominoplasty and breast surgery-are an example. Patients increasingly demand them, and our studies show they’re safe, yet they remain controversial in the medical community. Through ISAPS membership, I’ll engage with more colleagues around the globe in examining topics like this.”

“We found that the 100 patients who had the secondary combination procedure experienced complication and revision rates very similar to those of the other two groups,” said Dr. Stevens. “No major complications occurred at an average of 3.5 years post-op. Of the minor tissue or implant-related complications, 15 patients ultimately chose to have revision surgery, eight to address a minor complication and seven to exchange an implant for another size or type of filling.”

“It’s interesting to note,” Dr. Stevens continued,” that although some surgeons are concerned about breast position when combining a lift with an augmentation, even in revision surgery only a tiny percentage of women have another revision due to factors other than implant issues.”

In order to qualify for induction into the ISAPS, plastic surgeons must complete an accredited medical program in their home country. They must also be board certified and be a member in good standing of their own national plastic surgery organization; in the case of the United States, surgeons must be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Once admitted, they receive many benefits including eligibility to attend ISAPS meetings and courses and invitations to visit the surgical suites of international “master surgeons.”
